I have put this together for my groups to practise creative writing for Paper 1 Question 5 on the new AQA English Language 8700 exam.On the exam paper, there is a picture with a choice of two titles: remember it can be a choice between a narrative and a descriptive title, or it can be two narrative titles or two descriptive titles.Pictures and photographs implicitly convey a narrative—and that makes them ideal writing prompts for generating new short story ideas.
Most children have a natural creative streak but as anyone who has tried it knows, getting an idea out of your head and onto a piece of paper can be very challenging!
Spark the children's imagination by providing them a picture on which to base their story. Write a story based on what you imagine is happening.

Having a Picture Story Board for the author to give to the illustrator can help the process.The ability to accurately and vividly describe something in the world around you is not a skill that should be underestimated.Not only does it help a child's brain think in new and different ways, it also helps with their linguistic learning and development!If doing the exercise in a group, you can either have everyone use the same picture, or you can have a selection of unique images for each writer.Consider having each student or group member bring in a picture and trade with someone else.Or you can have the children swap authored books and let them illustrate each others.Having a different author/illustrator teaches the children how people collaborate to publish books.The children can then read each others works during quiet reading time.You can expand the project by having the children write "book reviews" of each others books.I have therefore left off the words narrative and descriptive here and simply used creative writing throughout - up to you which you want your students to practise - one or both. The four pictures are all taken from the internet: they are titled The lighthouse The log cabin The park at night The lake (at night) The idea of doing a quick 5 minute plan came from an AQA course I attended.I have also added a box each time for students to make quick 'first impressions' of a picture in the form of notes.
